Kretch’s on Marco Island

I’ve been driving by Kretch’s for several years and have been wondering what kind of restaurant it might be. Nobody I’ve asked has been there or heard anything about it. Last month my friends Sol and Carin told me they have eaten there several times and enjoyed it. They said the food was sort of down home, nothing gourmet, but very pleasant and casual.

So last Wednesday when we had plans with my golfing friends who choose to eat outdoors, I made a last minute reservation. The menu looked pretty well-rounded and the pricing was right. They have a full liquor license and also permitted me to bring wine with a reasonable $15 corkage fee.

(L to R): Tony, Paulette and Vince were all very chill enjoying cocktails at the only occupied table outside.

Entrees come with either a salad or the soup du jour. This was a very tasty Corn Bisque. Not too rich or creamy. Well-pureed corn with some whole kernels.
The house salad was simple, but fresh and satisfying. They offered several kinds of dressings.
The Seafood Strudel was made with Crisp phyllo dough and filled with a nice mix of shrimp and other seafood. The gravy was delicious, sort of like a lobster bisque. The side of potatoes were like a creamy gratin, also very good.
Vince enjoyed his Crispy Grouper, a sort of upscale fish sticks.
Barb ordered the Broiled Tripletail. As always she swapped out her starch for veggies. She liked the al dente string beans.
Tony ordered Shrimp Bernadette which came with a sweet potato puree. A thoroughly enjoyable dish.

Paulette ordered Swordfish with string beans and said she enjoyed her meal.
The Bread Pudding was a bit dense, but loaded up with plenty of whipped cream to ”lighten” it up. We all loved it.
The Apple Strudel also featured the chefs mastery of phyllo dough. The whipped cream and ice cream accompaniments were perfect.

The inside of Kretch’s was totally filled with customers. They had a bar that was completely occupied. On a Wednesday night the place seemed to be mostly locals. The cocktails and wines by the glass were all generous pours and all under $10 a drink. Even the Johnny Walker Black.

They had one or two servers out that night which is common to every restaurant this year.
Nonetheless, after a slow start the service picked up and proved to be very attentive and thoughtful. This turned out to be a very nice find for us and I’ll issue no ”kvetches” about Kretch’s. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that.) Try it, you’ll like it.
