The Clam Bar (Smitty’s) in Somers Point, NJ

Here’s a very brief post of a place that needs no publicity. It’s byob. It’s by the water in Somers Point, NJ. You can sit outside at the clam bar or inside at a table. A bit run down, but quite clean. Service is pretty quick and the food is very fresh and homemade. Everybody eating there is in a good mood and happy to chat. Anytime I’m downashore, I try really hard to get there. They have much more than clams on the menu, but I’m there for two items.

This is the combination clam chowder. Manhattan style topped with New England style. It’s absolutely the tastiest mix of the two worlds. Half the guilt of a large bowl of New England. Don’t miss this!

A dozen freshly shucked middle necks. Sweet and filling. Served with a nice cocktail sauce on the side. Plenty of additional horseradish is available.
A close-up of clammy delight.
And the best restaurant-themed tee shirt I’ve ever had the pleasure of buying. I just need to figure out the appropriate place the wear it.

If you’re a fan of raw clams and great chowda, this is the place for you. Don’t shower before you go. Wear your flip flops. Bring some cold beer or chilled wine (preferably a screw top). This place is the living definition of chill.
