Barb and I decided to go for a very casual meal last Saturday night. We were both in the mood for Mexican food and have wanted to try Zaza on Marco Island. We knew it had changed hands in the last year or two and had not heard much from our friends about it, so off we went. Got a reservation with no problem two hours in advance. That’s the advantage of going to the more laid back, not main stream eateries.
They started us out with some warm chips and green salsa. A tasty “amuse-bouche “.I had called to ask if they had a corkage fee. $15… not bad for a place that has a wine and beer license. This Spanish white goes perfectly with rich or spicy foods. Reuda wines are moderately light, have a subtle amount of fruit, and just enough acid to balance out the richness of cheesy dishes. Being a cheesy guy it worked perfectly for me that night.
I also had a Modelo Negro which went nicely with my meal.
Being a cheesy guy, I can’t resist the lure of Queso Fondido. This one had Chorizo and Jalapeno mixed in. I must admit this photo was taken after I had eaten some of it. As I chowed this melty treat I sensed it coursing through my veins, going to my heart and calcifying. You know: a mixture of guilt and pleasure.A close-up of the guilty indulgence. As always, Barb went the healthier route and ordered a Ceviche. This one came with shrimp. She enjoyed it.I ordered an entree of Chicken Enchiladas in a Mole sauce. It came on a corn tortilla with sliced onions. This was a very tasty dish. The mole was excellent. It was also offered on a flour tortilla. They included a side of rice which was perfectly cooked and complemented my dish.
These are the new owner/chefs, Esteban and Iris. They are lovely people who are eager to please their clientele.
I asked about Chile Rillenos which are my favorite Mexican dish. They said they’d be serving them the next day and often have them as a special.
We both really enjoyed our meals at Zaza. The decor was cute Mexicana, the atmosphere was laid back and the ambiance was very mellow. We’ll be sure to return soon after verifying that they’ll be offering Chile Rillenos that night.

Looks like fresh ingredients and prepared carefully. Ceviche looked a little atypical with whole shrimp and avocado chunks.
Another well written report that leaves me with yet another craving that will haunt me until it’s satisfied.
