Shilla Korean Restaurant in Sarasota

Every time we visit Bobby and Debbie in Nakomis, we are driven to eat at our favorite Korean restaurant in Florida. In and around Philadelphia there is a plethora of Korean restaurants. Not so in Florida. In Naples we got our first one just last year.

Shilla is in an outside shopping center. It’s owned and run by a very nice family. The food is delicious, our waitress (the owner’s daughter) is delightful, and it’s just crowded enough to be successful while always having room for us to get a table. They have a $10 corkage fee which we take advantage of while always ordering a small bottle of Soju, a tasty Korean rice wine.

The appetizers are all served with a tasty dipping sauce which complements everything without overpowering the flavors.
Tteok-bokki was a new treat for us. The soft rice cake (actually noodle shaped) with fish cake strips, a boiled egg, scallions and red pepper paste were a real treat.
The Goon Mandu were pan fried vegetable and bean curd dumplings. I’m a big fan of Mandu in any form.
The Seafood Pancake is my measure of just how good a Korean restaurant is. This is one of the best I’ve ever had.
Typically, a good Korean restaurant will serve small plates of tasty snacks along with the meal. Kim-chee is always one of the treats and the others will vary from meal to meal.
A dish I always crave is Galbi, marinated and grilled short ribs. Thank goodness Bobby ordered them.
This was my first encounter with Samgyupsal. It was grilled pork belly with lettuce, garlic and a sauce. One wraps the pork in the lettuce with the sauce, some garlic and rice. I enjoyed it, but will return next time to my usual, the Pork Bulgogi which is stir fried marinated spicy pork.
Barb and Debbie both enjoyed the Dolsot Bibimbop. It’s steamed rice, topped with veggies and a protein (they both had it with shrimp) and a fried egg. It’s served in a sizzling stone pot. The rice at the bottom gets cooked hard and is a crispy treat. Both ladies had brown rice instead of white.
Soju is a very popular spirit in Korea which complements the meal nicely. A bit of an acquired taste, but tasty and not too pricey.

We love coming to this restaurant and always enjoy our meal. The atmosphere is very casual and it’s a fun place to enjoy exotic food. I highly recommend it.
