Summit House in Summit, NJ

For our last night in Summit and to celebrate my coming of age(70), we decided to go to the Summit House for dinner. It is easily the best all around restaurant in town. Pleasant ambiance with an energy level that keeps it far from dull or staid. Very friendly servers are well-informed on the menu and describe the dishes well. Several dishes require description because they involve exotic flavors or different, unexpected (might I say surreal) ingredients and techniques.
The cocktails are perfectly made with interesting twists. The wine list is well chosen and wines by the glass are good pours of excellent variety.

This Cauliflower and Beet appetizer was new the night we went. It was enhanced by Pistachio butter, kale pesto, lemon feta and caramel pistachio. We shared it and found it a generous portion.

The bread came with a delicious homemade butter concoction.

I had a glass of this delicious Washington blend. They let you taste a wine before they pour a glass. To me, thats a very upscale move.

This dry-aged duck for two was my choice for one. You don’t turn 70 every day, so I splurged. It was beautifully presented. The breast was perfectly medium rare and the legs were juicy and crispy succulent. I ripped apart the carcass and was tempted to pick it up and gnaw the bones. This was by far the best duck Ive ever eaten and I’ve eaten a lot of ducks. I think the Jamaican jerk Marinade is what made this dish.

These cured chickpeas came on the side along with some dirty rice. Some really nice sides.

Barb ordered Halibut with Roasted Red Pepper, black garlic emulsion, Ravigote (say what?), artichokes, root vegetable succotash and chervil. That’s quite a mouthful to descibe and she really enjoyed it.
The doggy bag was inevitable with a duck for two. Somehow the leftovers were eaten and enjoyed.

I strongly suggest you try the Summit House when you have a special occasion or are simply in the area and feel like indulging in an upscale, fine dining experience. I’ve been there a few times over the last few years and find that it’s always great and never disappoints.

  1. Once again described in such a way to unleash the appetite of any real eater. The duck looks amazingly delicious as well as the bunch of healthy looking sides.
