Mikonos Restaurant in Ewing, NJ

Barb and I have just recently returned to the Princeton area. As I always state, we are big fans of BYOB restaurants. They make dining out far more affordable. Also you get to bring wines that you favor rather than choosing from somone else’s list of wines that they can get away with marking up triple. The area around here is loaded with BYOB places that have to be sought out. Ewing, NJ is just outside of Trenton, near Princeton and has several BYOB spots. There is a plethora of various ethnic cuisines to be found. Most of these places are ”mom and pop”.

For our first visit to Ewing we searched out Mikonos. The setting was quite casual. We were seated immediately. The waitress was friendly, informative and efficient.

I started with a cup of Lentil Soup. Loved the basic vegetable broth that complemented the generous portion of lentils.
The Eggplant salad (which I couldn’t pronounce) was wonderfully smooth and tasty with that eggplant ”bite” that I enjoy. It was served with astonishingly fresh pita. ( This photo was taken after we had eaten half of the portion.)

The Grilled Octopus app had a fair amount of octopus mixed in with a nicely dressed salad.
A small salad was served with each entree. Obviously superfluous for us since we had salad with the octopus. Nonetheless, we both enjoyed it with it’s simple, tangy dressing.
Barb ordered the Sea Bass which was perfectly grilled and swapped out her potato side for veggies.
The whole fish after it seemed to have done a “strip tease” on Barb’s plate.
Moussaka is my ”go-to” dish when eating Greek food. This one had a delicious Bechamel filling with tasty meat and good slices of eggplant. The tomato sauce was piquante, with a nice oregano presence.
I impatiently scarfed up my Baklava dessert before thinking to take a picture. Thankfully they had a tray of it to photograph.
Greek wines are not heavily marketed in the US. I find that nice Spanish wines compliment most foods very nicely. This Riserva goes with just about everything.

We absolutely loved our dinner at Mikonos. We were served nicely. We were unrushed. The food was great. The place is perfect for large and small parties to enjoy equally. We went on a weeknight, so I can’t vouch for the weekend crowds. I recommend it highly.
