Mi Espana in Princeton, NJ

Last night we decided last minute to go out for a casual meal and try someplace new. I’d heard about a new Spanish place that served tapas and paella. I had driven by and saw a sign for oxtail and octopus specials. Say no more.

Mi Espana is a small place in the Princeton shopping center. There are outdoor picnic tables throughout the center to accommodate outside dining for those of us still a little nervous about COVID. The chef is a delightful Spaniard who comes out often to speak with and check on his customers. Our waiter, GianLuca was a sharp, polite and very pleasant young man who knew the menu well and described the offerings very accurately.

As usual, I forgot to photograph the first dish. This is what’s left of my half of the Sopa del Mar. The tomato base with saffron was rich and delicious. It contained plenty of seafood. They split a very generous portion for us. quite a deal at $13.
Barb’s Grilled Octopus was the most tender octopus I’ve had in recent memory. It had several large pieces of juicy, delicate tentacles . The dish was served with potatoes and grilled veggies. Barb asked that they keep the potatoes out and add more veggies. They were quick to comply with her request.
This sumptuous plate of Oxtail was just perfect. They braised the oxtail in a Rioja wine sauce which gave it a tremendous depth of flavor. The meat was wonderfully soft and fell off of the bone. I greedily sucked any remaining meat and cleaned the bones like an absolute animal. The accompanying potatoes were perfect for sopping up the gravy.
I feel that flan is too often dense and heavy. This Flan was light and very tasty. The portion was perfect for two to share.

We were able to bring out own wine to Mi Espana. I brought a Spanish red that paired perfectly with everything we ate. We decided that this restaurant is worthy of very frequent return visits. I highly recommend Mi Espana for people who enjoy Spanish food. You can’t beat it for a friendly, casual and very pleasant BYOB.

  1. That octopus could have jumped up and strangled me. Otherwise it looks yummy esp the oxtail. Once again you have sniffed out yet another winner.
