A2B Indian Vegetarian Restaurant in Princeton, NJ

Barb and I had a yen for Indian food last night. My friend Nav, who was born in India, recommended this place A2B which happens to be right around the corner from our home. I had tried it by myself for a quick lunch a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

Those of you who know me well must be thinking: Vegetarian? Not Josh! And of course you are right. Barb is always joking that my favorite veggie is Mac and Cheese. True. But isn’t that vegetarian?

Anyhoo, we mosied over to A2B with a bottle of wine that would complement almost any Indian food. It was a Dr Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling. I could have also brought a Zinfandel, a big Shiraz or even a Champagnois.

When we got there we were seated immediately. The place had modern, simplistic decor. We appeared to be the only non-Indian customers and the place was pretty full. The menus were digital graphs on the table which you scanned with your cell phone and read. Pretty cool. I had seen this format a few times during the height of the pandemic. Our waiter came by to take our order. His mastery of the English language was fair at best. Between his lacking language skill and my terrible hearing aid communication was challenging at best. Nonetheless, we got our order in and he confirmed it with his tablet/order pad. After this initial challenge, the rest of the meal went swimmingly.

We started our meal with this appetizer of Gobi 65. It was fried cauliflower served with sweet onions and peppers. It was truly delicious. They gave us a small ramekin of ketchup possibly for dipping. We tried it once and then ignored it the rest of the night.
I’m a big fan of Onion Kulcha and order it every time I eat Indian food. It’s chewy, savory bread made quickly and always a great food pusher.
Barb ordered the Vegetable Jalfrezi curry which was her favorite dish of the night. I also enjoyed it, but needed some Raitha (a yogurt sauce with cucumbers and spices) to cool my mouth a bit after each bite.
I ordered a vegetable curry called Karl Kari Kurma. I usually get chicken korma which has a coconut cream sauce. This dish also had coconut milk, but was not as creamy. It was absolutely delicious and and required a bit of raitha to cool it down for my palate. Barb, by the way, needed no raitha all night because she loves the burn. She was kind enough to let me order all of our dishes “medium”.
Barb and I are big fans of eggplant curries. We routinely order Beigan Bartha at all of the Indian restaurants that we visit. A2B had a different dish called Ennai Kathirikai Kuzhambu. (Try saying that 5 times fast.). The sauce was very tasty with what appeared to be puréed eggplant and veggies. It contained four small tender eggplants .We agreed that it was a good dish, but lacked the chunky eggplant pieces that we enjoy a bit more.
This was the “menu” on our table. A quick scan gave us the full menu on our cell phones. The menu has very clear descriptions of all the dishes.
My dessert was Mango Kulfi. It’s like a frozen yogurt or ice cream in texture. Smooth and subtly flavored . Not too sweet, but refreshing and satisfying. I really enjoyed it.

My impression of A2B is that it’s really a top notch Indian restaurant. I’m unused to being limited to vegetarian dishes. Still, I had an excellent experience overall last night. The communication deficit was overcome by the great descriptions on the menu. The service was timely, gracious and unrushed. I was able to bring a wine that I knew would match well and didn’t have to pay triple retail. The two of us had a filling and very satisfying dinner for $77 including a 20% tip and tax. I consider this restaurant to be a real winner and will be sure to thank my friend, Nav, for referring me.
