Sammy’s Pizza of Naples or Mikey’s Birthday Dinner

Every year we go out for my friend Mike’s birthday. He is a man of very discriminating taste. His favorite foods: pizza, burgers, Coca-Cola and milk chocolate. We have recently discovered his love of Camembert cheese which threw everyone for a loop.
Of course, being a dear friend, he indulges us by going out to lots of other restaurants. For example, he eats Chicken Tikka at Indian restaurants. He’ll endure a filet mignon if he must. Nonetheless, he eats many $80 bowls of spaghetti with meatballs.
Plus he’s the world’s greatest designated driver because he has one small shot of vodka a year to indulge us and celebrate his birthday.

This year we found a new pizza place near his home in East Naples. Barb and I enjoy a thin crust pizza which was what they offered. Mike and Lynn, Jay and Paula, Barb and I went to check it out and celebrate. We brought a couple bottles of wine and I seem to remember a $20 corkage fee.

This is the Caesar salad with chicken. It was a good starter which Barb ordered to supplement her annual dose of pizza. Nice dressing with a simple presentation.
This mixed salad had lots of different ingredients and tasted very nice. A solid salad to supplement a pizza dinner.
At my request they brought over some nice anchovies which can embellish and brighten up any salad. Very gracious of them to serve these little extras.
This is their Margharita pizza which had lots of freshly chopped tomatoes and fresh basil. It also had a generous portion of mozzarella cheese. I enjoyed my taste, but had to save room for my choice of pizzas.
This is the Pepperoni pizza, Mike’s very favorite choice of pie. The reason I only have this close-up is because it was half eaten by the time I remembered to take the picture.
This was the Sammy’s Soecial pie.. It was loaded with sausage, mushrooms, sliced peppers and plenty of cheese. I flipped out on this because it included all of the perfect pizza essentials.

We all enjoyed Sammy’s pizza. Almost everyone was thrilled with the crust and toppings. In a later discussion, Jay admitted that he was not happy with the crust because it was a bit too “cracker-like”. I get his point, but have personally come to live the cracker quality of many thin crust pizzas and flatbreads. It’s certainly a point of personal preference.

I feel that Sammy’s is a place that should flourish. The ambiance is “casual pizza joint”. Their menu has just a few offerings other than pizza. The servers couldn’t be nicer. They let you byob. For me it’s a place that I’ll return to whenever I get the yen for pizza. Give it a try.

  1. Like Jay I prefer a more substantial crust and of course Debbie the bread maven agrees. However this pizza looks really great and as usual you have initiated yet another craving. Another great review from a fellow Eater.

  2. Hi buddy,
A thought, a suggestion – perhaps it would be nice if you included a link to the restaurant, or at least an address so your readers can easily know where exactly the place is located. A link would allow us to easily go to the site and check out the menu.
Nice report and photos, makes me want a pie now at 7:30 in the AM!
