Sometimes we choose to go out last minute for something quick, inexpensive and satisfying. It’s a bonus if the meal ends up being really enjoyable and double bonus if it’s byob.
Last Monday we had a hankering for sushi, but didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg. A bit of googling around led us to Sushi John in nearby Skillman, NJ. We laughed about the name, checked the menu online and popped over with minimal expectations.
We started with some Edamame that the sushi chef laid on us. He seemed happy to have someone to chat with and serve. This very nice salad came with each entree. Very fresh and tasty. It had a good ginger dressing on the side.Another accompaniment was this Miso Soup. It tasted good, but was just a bit salty for my liking. I almost always order Scallion Pancake when it’s offered on any Asian menu. This one was deep fried, a bit oily, but incredibly crispy. I really enjoyed it.This Sashimi platter for two made the meal for both of us. There was a ton of fresh sashimi. The yellowtail was marinated in a special sauce that we both enjoyed. The white tuna was sprinkled with some interesting spices. This is a close-up of the platter. The fish choices were very basic, nothing exotic. Beautifully presented and fit the bill for what we desired that night.Barb had a yen for hotsake so we brought the fancy stuff, about $9 a bottle. They happily set up a fancy warmer to heat it up for us.This is Nick, our host, sushi chef and new favorite local guy.
Nick is aware that his sushi selection seems pretty pedestrian. I asked if he ever gets more exotic fish like Uni (sea urchin), Amaebi(sweet shrimp), Ikura (salmon roe), or Scallops. He answered that on Thursday nights they have a much larger selection of fish and seafood. They also offer Omakase on Thursday nights. I told him I tend to shy away from Omakase because I prefer not to pay $150 per person for dinner. He told me his is usually about $50 per person. That price is right in my wheelhouse and I’ll be showing up pretty soon for Thursday Omikase.
