One 53 in Rocky Hill, a two year follow up.

We’ve had limited success trying out new restaurants this year, so I decided we should revisit some places we’ve enjoyed in the last few years. We really liked both meals at One 53 two years ago, but heard they’d changed hands last year. We didn’t visit and had no way to evaluate the new owners or chef. This week Barb and I chose to dine Al fresco on a beautiful night and remembered One 53.

They have a nice wine list with excellent choices and reasonable pricing. We enjoyed this California Roussanne for $55.
They charge $3 for a basket of bread that is very fresh and accompanied by a bean purée. They also offered butter for the bread. This basket is missing the first slice that I had already eaten. Also, after reviewing my bill today, there was no charge for the bread.
They bring water to the table in nice bottles and leave it. I requested water from the Delaware River.
As often is the case, I lopped off a piece of these Stuffed Zucchini Flowers before taking this picture. Their presentation was much prettier than mine. The dish was outstanding. The flowers included baby zucchini on the end and were stuffed with ricotta and herbs. The fry was very light and delicate.
The people at the next table were served this Salmon Tartar. Rather than mooching some of theirs, we added it to our order. Good thing that we did, because it was delicious and matched very well with the Roussanne.
My entree of Bucatini with Jumbo Lump Crabmeat was both filling and outasite. They garnished it with fried onions which initially looked strange, but added an unexpected crunch and interesting element to the dish.
Barb’s appetizer was a bowl of perfectly fresh Mussels with a nice piece of toast to soak up the really silky sauce.
Being a woman with a massive appetite, Barb ordered a side dish of Grilled Veggies for her main dish. She was thrilled with them.
Our server, Abby, was a pleasure. She described everything in detail, made sure we were happy with our choices and advised us well through the meal.

Though I was pretty full, Abby brought out a dessert menu which included this Chocolate Bread pudding. It came with whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. One of the best desserts I’ve had this year.

Needless to say, we really enjoyed our meal at One 53. Everything we ate was truly delicious. In addition to Abby, we were well taken care of by several auxiliary staff. The outside seating area is simple, but clean and quiet. We’ve never eaten indoors, but it appears to be a bit crowded and noisy.

I highly recommend this restaurant. It’s surely one of the best dining venues in the Princeton area.

  1. Everything pictured and described look outstanding. From the tartare, blossoms. Bucatini with crab, mussels, and perfectly looking veggies I just want to dive in either an open mouth. I assume they have a full bar? And the bread pudding ..omg!
