Jules on Market in Bristol PA Updated

We discovered Jules on Market during Covid when you could only go to restaurants where you could sit outdoors. Jules offered that amenity along with really excellent food and service. For me it was the start of a wonderful relationship.

I wrote a review of Jules just one year ago. Since then they have expanded their space into the adjacent store and, I believe, opened the kitchen to give greater visibility to their staff.

Several of my friends have told me that they no longer go to Jules at Market. Their complaints across the board are that it has gotten too expensive and the portions have become considerably smaller. I didn’t notice that on a previous visit earlier this summer.

We decided to visit again with a more critical attitude. We returned with Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Abby. On a Wednesday, of course, because they still offer buck a shuck deals on Wednesdays. Up to a dozen with each entree. I’m in for that deal.

Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Abby. Friends for over 50 years. Made me wear my first Tuxedo at their wedding.
Most of these oysters were sniffed and devoured by yours truly. They were local Delaware oysters, perfectly shucked.
When you’re eating fresh oysters, you should always consider a French Chablis. The limestone from the Chablis mountain perfectly pairs with the minerals of the oyster beds.
Uncle Ronnie went with a Caesar Salad. Simple and delicious.
Abby ordered a wedge salad, hold the bacon. Nicely composed.
The entrees at Jules do not include any sides. This is common at fancy steak houses. Not so much at fish houses. There is not a large list of veggie sides. Lucky for me they had nicely Sautéed Asparagus. I would suggest that if they choose to continue this policy, they might offer more choices of side dishes/veggies.
Barb was not voracious, but was enamored by the Hamachi (Yellowtail) Crudo. It was an appetizer, but along with oysters and some asparagus, satisfied her appetite. She really enjoyed the Hamachi.
Abby was pleased with her Jail Island Salmon. It was perfectly prepared with a tomatoey sauce. Her 6 ounce portion was more than enough.

Uncle Ronny and I were both craving some Rib steak. The 24 ounce Rib steak was plenty big to share. The best deal was that we both enjoy our steaks “Pittsburgh Rare”. This steak was easily the best Rib I’ve ever had at a restaurant, including steak houses, which usually leave me wanting for something tastier or more tender. Could be that I go into steak houses with huge expectations. Jules steak was a major surprise.
This is Julia. She guided us through the meal and made sure we got everything we wanted. Very gracious.
I ordered the only dessert at the table. As usual, I attacked it before remembering to photograph it. This Pistachio Tres Leches was absolutely OUTASIGHT . Nuf said

We all really enjoyed our meals. The prices were, in fact , higher than on previous visits. So are backpacks for school, eggs, beef and everything else. Some portions looked small for me, but not for Barb and Abby.

Barb was disappointed that the entrees did not include veggies. There were side options, like asparagus which I love, but not all that many. Nothing she really loved, so we ordered the grilled asparagus.

Let’s talk noise. The place holds more people than it did previously. The weather this summer has been really too hot to eat outside. So lots of people are eating inside here. And it’s noisy. It bothers me a bit and Barb terribly. Sad, but not bad enough to keep me from the Wednesday buck a shucks.

As a point of reference, this morning I ate a breakfast sandwich of Pork roll, egg and cheese on a croissant for $10. I’m obviously not at McDonalds, but the place is not as upscale as Jules. And I’m sure a Whopper with cheese now costs $6.50. My, how things have gotten more expensive.

One must also remember that Jules at Market is BYOB. My Chablis that cost me about $30 would easily cost $90-$120 in an upscale restaurant with a liquor license.

I wonder if there is a tariff on a Whoppers.

  1. The meals look wonderfully presented except for the Cesar salad. The portions looked to be on the small medium size. Their online menu doesn’t list the prices which I find disingenuous. I wonder how much that delicious looking rib steak cost and my guess was that it was at least $75. The fact that it’s byob and the Weds buck a shuck would explain why ot was so crowded. Your report, as usual, is well written, entertaining, and really gives me a good description of this restaurant.
