My friend, Art, turned me onto Amaro this past Summer to use in modifying both a Negroni and a Boulevardier.
I’ve recently discovered this lovely simple cocktail called a Black Manhattan . It is very similar to a Manhattan, using both orange and regular bitters. You can choose your favorite whiskey (can you guess mine…ha ha!). Of course the next ingredient is Amaro. A little sweet, a little bitter. An Italian classic. Garnish with a VERY nice cherry, like a Luxardo. It’s worth the extra bucks to have these on-hand for lots of different cocktails.

The recipe calls for
2 oz whiskey
1 oz Amaro
A dash of both Angastera and Orange bitters
A cherry garnish
Add all the goodies to your martini shaker. Shake 30 times. (I don’t buy the no shake philosophy, only stirring. I guess I’ll never be an elite bartender. Shaking does the trick for me.)
Ice and chill your martini glass. Put a cherry on a toothpick.
Drink and enjoy. One drink limit, unless you’re staying home.
Nicely done….I’d add a smidgen more whiskey and amaro though as a filled martini glass looks good.
